Tragacanth :

Synonyms:-

Tragacantha

Biological Sources :-

Tragacanth is dried gummy exdation obtained by preparing incisions on stems and branches of Astragulus releated to family leguminosae.

Chemical Constituents :-


‌1) Carbohydrates: water soluble part tragacanth (8-10%)
‌2) Water insoluble part bassorin (60-70%)

Uses :-

Used as Demulcent.
‌Also used as emollient in cosmetics
‌Used as thickening , suspending and an emulsifying agent
For better result of suspending it is used along with Acacia

Agar :


Synonyms :-


Agar – agar, Japanese-Isinglass

Biological Sources :-


It is dried gelatinous substance obtained from Gelldium amansii and several Other species Of red Algae like Gracilaria and petropetrocladia , belonging to family Rhodo
phyceae

Chemical Constituents :-

Agar consist of two different polysacchorides
named as agarose and agaropectin . Agarose is responsible for gel strength of agar and composed of D- galactose and 3,6 unhydro L- galactose units . It contains about 3.5% cellulose and 6% of nitrogen Containing substance . Agaropectin used as or responsible for the viscosity of a agar solution.

Uses :-

used as Emulsifying agent
Used as bulk laxative
Used in preparation of gellies
Used in the preparation of bacteriological culture medium

Acacia :

Synonyms :-

Gum acacia, Gum arabic

Biological Sources :-

Indian gum is the dried gummy exudation obtained from the stem and branches of Acacia Arabica wild related to family leguminosae.

Chemical Constituents :-

It consist of arabin which is complex mixture of calcium magnesium and potassium salts of arabic acid.Arabic acid on hydrolysis gives 1-rhamnose, D- galactose and D- glucoronic acid.It also contains an enzyme oxidase.

Uses :-

Acacia is the demulcent .It is also administered intravenously in haemolysis .In the form of mucilage,it is used as a suspending agent Good emulsifying agent for fixed oils ,volatile oils and also for liquid paraffin…

In cold water it swells up and after warming it slowly dissolves to form viscous solutions.
